But if you're sitting on a 32-bit WinXP (if you don't know, then 95% you are sitting on it), then you have unused 5 Gigs or RAM. WinXP 32bit can and only will use MAX 3GB or RAM. It doesn't understand more.
But if you go to 64bit Windows, most of the apps/games will become unusable/unplayable.
